A rock hits your windshield on I-40, and now you’re staring at a crack. Your first thought is probably: Will my insurance cover this?
The short answer is: it depends. But for most Tennessee drivers with the right coverage, the answer is yes — and the process is simpler than you’d expect.
Here’s what you need to know:
Tennessee Is Not a Zero-Deductible State
A handful of states — Florida, Kentucky, and South Carolina — require insurance companies to replace windshields at no cost to the driver as long as they carry comprehensive coverage. And unfortunately, Tennessee is not one of them.
That means if you file a claim for windshield damage in Tennessee, you’ll typically pay your deductible before your insurance kicks in. What that deductible looks like depends entirely on your policy.
What Type of Coverage Do You Need?
Auto glass damage from road debris, hail, falling objects, or vandalism falls under comprehensive coverage — not liability, and not collision. If you only carry liability insurance (the state minimum), a windshield claim won’t be covered at all.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Liability only — No coverage for your windshield. You pay out of pocket.
- Comprehensive coverage — Covers windshield damage from rocks, hail, falling branches, and similar non-collision events. You pay your deductible.
- Full glass coverage / glass endorsement — An add-on some insurers offer that reduces your glass deductible, sometimes to $0. Worth asking your agent about.
What About Repairs vs. Full Replacement?
This is where it gets interesting. Many insurance companies will waive the deductible entirely for a chip repair — not because Tennessee law requires it, but because fixing a small chip is far cheaper than replacing the whole windshield. It’s in their interest to cover it.
If the damage is small enough to repair (generally a chip smaller than a quarter, or a crack shorter than a dollar bill), there’s a real chance your insurer covers it at no cost to you. That’s one more reason not to wait on a small chip — repairs are faster, cheaper, and often free through insurance.
Will Filing a Claim Raise My Rates?
This is one of the most common questions we get. The good news: in most cases, filing a comprehensive glass claim in Tennessee does not raise your premium. Comprehensive claims are treated as “not-at-fault” events by most insurers. That said, every insurer is different. If you’re unsure, it’s worth a quick call to your agent before filing.
You Have the Right to Choose Your Own Shop
Your insurance company may suggest a preferred vendor — often a national chain. You are not required to use them. Tennessee drivers have the right to choose their own auto glass shop, and your insurer must work with that shop on the claim.
A Touch of Class AutoGlass works directly with most major insurance providers. We handle the paperwork and billing on our end so the process is as smooth as possible for you.
What If My Car Has ADAS Technology?
Newer vehicles with lane-keep assist, automatic braking, or forward collision warning use cameras and sensors mounted to the windshield. When the glass is replaced, those systems often need to be recalibrated.
ADAS recalibration should be covered as part of your windshield replacement claim — but insurance adjusters sometimes push back on it. Make sure your shop documents the recalibration and includes it in the claim. We do this as a standard part of our process.
